Best Memory Foam Mattresses

A comfortable night’s sleep is essential to staying happy and healthy, and not getting a good night’s sleep can lead to sleepless nights and achy mornings. Memory foam mattresses aren’t like your traditional box spring mattresses in that they conform to the shape of the person sleeping in it, and remember to spring back to their original position once the individual gets off it.

Given that memory foam mattresses offer the ultimate comfort for most sleepers, we loved each and every moment of our countless hours of research spent with the 30 foam mattress options we tested. Our detailed assessment included sleeping on each one for a minimum 6 hours per day and over a period of three months.

We narrowed down our options by speaking to sleep experts, and invited individuals to rest on them in primary sleep positions—side, stomach and back in order to determine which ones work best for each respective position. In addition, we took notes on performance month by month, and concluded that the Zinus Memory Foam Green Tea mattress works well for most common sleeping positions.

The Zinus Memory Foam Green Tea mattress won hands down in our foam mattress showdown for several notable reasons including:

  • It has received over a whopping 13,000 raving reviews on Amazon alone. So even if a 1000 people did not feel its performance was up to par with their needs, the other 12,000 or more consumers can’t be wrong.
  • Zinus even though not an American company took the initiative to conform their foam products to U.S. standards, which in this case means CertiPUR – US Certified.

Memory foam mattresses that are CertiPUR – US Certified are made without harmful flame retardants that may cause cancer, damage fertility or unborn child or cause genetic side effects, made without formaldehyde, mercury, lead and other heavy metals, and have a low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality.

  • The aforementioned characteristics of the Zinus Memory Foam Green Tea mattress make it a great choice for homes with pets and kids, and won’t cause any harm to your environment.
  • Another aspect we loved about the Zinus Memory Foam Green Tea mattress is that is can be ordered in a wide range of sizes and styles. The 8 inch model is designed for back sleepers, while the 10+ inch models are a great choice for both back, side and stomach sleepers.

Unlike most other memory foam mattresses we checked out, all the variants of the Zinus Memory Foam Green Tea mattress are backed by an impressive hassle-free 5 year warranty, so you really can’t go wrong with any of them. Adding to this, the 12 inch version we tested was efficiently compressed using patented compression technology, rolled and shipped in a box right to our doorstep.

Furthermore, the company infuses its memory foam mattresses with natural green tea extract to maintain freshness. The inclusion of this natural substance also makes the Zinus Green Tea Mattress eco-friendly and keeps that moist, muggy feeling at bay. It offers medium firmness, making it a great choice for both back and side sleepers.

Memory Foam Mattress Buying Guide

What to look for in the Best Memory Foam Mattress?

Before you head out on the shopping trail for the best foam mattress, it is important that you understand what memory foam is, and which type is right for your sleeping position. So whether you’re a side, back or stomach sleeper, suffer from chronic back pain or simply want to sleep well, read on to find out what aspects to consider so that you can make a viable choice.

First things First—What is Memory Foam?

Contrary to all the overly confusing and scientific answers or marketing blurb you may have heard, the only thing memory foam mattresses remember is to regain their original position once you get off it.

This allows the memory foam to offer unmatched support for weight of a sleeping body, and in such a way that it is even and balanced than any other conventional mattress.

The problem with traditional mattresses is that that they do not conform or fit well to your body’s shape or are overly soft and can’t handle the weight that’s applied on them resulting in a hammock like effect rather than a cradling effect with memory foam mattresses.

First developed for the space industry, memory foam is a type of manmade foam, which is basically a viscoelastic material—visco meaning that it is thick and has a high density and elastic meaning that it reforms to its original shape after being distorted.

Memory foam is heat sensitive, and works by reacting to an individual’s body heat in order to mould to their body shape. This ultra-supportive material embraces your body in every position, allowing for soft comfort on the shoulders, back and hips, which consequently gives you the best of both worlds — healthy uninterrupted sleep and relaxes your pressure points.

It is also a great choice if you’re easily awoken by your partner’s movements because you’re enveloped by delightful foam.

How is Memory Foam Made? Why is it get so Hot and is it Safe?

Memory foam is similar to other types of foams with the difference being that it is viscoelastic hence it reacts and softens when exposed to heat. There are several chemical compounds involved in the manufacturing process, which vary across manufacturers since each may have their own recipe or formula.

The process to make memory foam first entails combining water and several other chemicals with a reactive agent. This aerates them to a point where foam is created, which is then sprayed continuously or set into molds and allowed to dry. And Voila! You’ve got memory foam!

A question that’s on most consumers minds is why does memory foam get so hot? Memory foam material is heat sensitive hence reacts to the heat of the body placed upon it. While this may not be an issue for most sleepers, hot sleepers may complain of the mattress getting a bit hot.

Due to the fact that memory foam reacts and softens when exposed to heat, it can feel softer in the summer months and warmer and firmer in the winter.

Furthermore, the temperature of the room can also affect the performance the memory foam mattress in certain weather conditions, so you may experience a completely different feeling depending on the weather and time of year.

In your quest to find the best memory foam mattress, you may have come across several websites warning you of the health risks associated with certain chemicals used in the manufacturing process.

While we aren’t saying that you shouldn’t pay heed to these warnings, you should buy a memory foam mattress from a reputable manufacturer because they are the ones who’ve invested millions of dollars into research and development to ensure that their products are safe to use.

However, if you do suffer from adverse health issues, speak to your doctor first to see if a memory foam mattress is right for you.

When shopping for the best memory foam mattress, there are several aspects to consider, most notably size, memory foam type and density.

Size – Even though memory foam mattresses are backed by innovative technology, they can be ordered in all regular sizes, making it easy to get the right fit for your bed frame.

Whether you’ve got a generously spaced California King or a space saving single bed, you can be sure that the perfect fit is out there. Adding to this, memory foam mattresses are also compatible with adjustable pivot foundations that adjust them automatically to your specific comfort needs.

Know your Memory Foam

As mentioned earlier, memory foam can contain several different ingredients such as petroleum and plant-based oils. If you’re concerned about synthetic or toxic chemicals, you may want to opt for a plant-based memory foam mattress. That said, here are the three common types of memory foam:

Traditional – regarded as the most oldest and common types of memory foam, traditional foam mattresses aka synthetic foams are made up of petroleum-based polyols and offer great support for the body.

Pros:

  • Distributes weight evenly to provide uniform comfort and great pressure point relief
  • High density means better longevity
  • Wide range of size options available

            Cons:

  • Takes a bit longer to inflate to full potential owing to high density foam
  • May retain excessive heat

Gel – The gel used in memory foam mattresses is typically the same as the formulation used in inserts that are placed in shoes to reduce pressure and consequently alleviate body discomfort. This type of memory foam is a great choice for individuals who suffer from sore muscles, chronic pain and overall body stress.

Pros:

  • Pressure point relief + motion isolation
  • Gel creates cool sensation
  • Common types of memory foam

            Cons:

  • May get a bit warm during the night

Plant based – If you’d like to go the eco-friendly route, plant-based memory foam mattresses are a great choice. Just like the name might suggest, this type of foam mattresses is made from natural fibers hence have a more open-cell structure resulting in improved airflow throughout the mattress.

Pros:

  • Pressure point relief + motion isolation
  • Does not rely on body heat to conform hence much cooler
  • Larger cell structure improves breathability

            Cons:

  • Not many options available
  • A little expensive

A word about Memory Foam Density

Memory foam mattresses can be ordered in three common densities—high, medium and low density. Density represents how much the memory foam in a respective mattress weighs.

It dictates how the foam mattress holds up and how soft and hard it feels. However, choosing between the many densities can be tricky because there is no one size fits all design as preferences and body types vary across individuals.

Higher density does not always mean better quality, but means firmer foam, making this range of mattresses highly durable. Even though higher density memory foam mattresses usually contain more raw ingredients, they will probably disappoint in terms of comfort if you’re lightweight or prefer a medium mattress.

A 60-75kgs density memory foam mattress is ideally a great choice for most individuals. Lower density memory foam mattresses are easier to break into, meaning your body will adjust quicker to them compared to high density foam mattresses.

While there is no sure shot way of telling what the actual density is, rule of thumb is to go by the weight, where low density memory foam generally weighs 4 to 5 pounds per cubic foot and high density can go way up to 10 pounds per cubic foot.

Thickness of Layers

The amount of comfort and support you receive from a particular memory foam mattress depends on the thickness of the individual layers (in larger models) and the mattress as a whole. Most foam mattresses are made up of 3 layers of varying densities and firmness in order to offer the desired support and comfort for varying sleep positions.

The upper layer is made from innovative materials, which keep you cool, contour well to your body and is approximately between 1” to 4” thick. The second layer also known as the support layer is also in most cases between 1” and 4” thick, and the thicker it is, the firmer it will be. The last layer or the base is the thickest of all, and is made from high density foam to provide optimal support for the full mattress.

As a rule of thumb, mattresses with more layers tend to be more expensive owing to the extra layers and higher overall memory foam density. Take note that thicker memory foam mattresses or those with more layers aren’t always the best choice, but thinner models may be right for some sleepers.

Firmness Level

The word firmness in the memory foam mattress space means how fast the foam inside the mattress bounces back to its original state in response to pressure applied after resting on it.

This is indicated by IDF (Indentation Force Reflection), where 18 or less IDF tends to be much softer and is generally used in the comfort top layers and 30, and above is firmer and used to support the core layers.

The density of a memory foam mattress is not to be confused with firmness, because low density models have a thin memory foam layer set over the supportive foam base, which is responsible for the overall firmness.

Higher density foam mattresses are generally much thicker than their low density counterparts hence will be less firm. Even though there is no set standard for memory foam firmness, the IFD rating ranges from 10, 16, and 20 to 45 with the core foams, which should give you a good idea if the respective foam mattress is soft or firm.

Memory Foam Mattress Motion Isolation

When shopping for the best memory foam mattress, motion isolation is a term that you may have heard often, but what exactly does it mean? One of the noteworthy features and what makes memory foam mattresses a great choice for couples is that they absorb the energy and individual movements directly and rarely transfer it to the other side of the bed.

A foam mattress with excellent motion isolation capabilities will absorb movements such as tossing, turning and getting in and out of bed without the other person feeling them. In terms of density, the thicker the foam, the better motion isolation you will enjoy.
